Reviewing Bank Statements and Payslips: A Practical Guide for Lending and Leasing Teams

Statements and payslips decide loans and leases every day. What reviewers can check, what software adds, and how to keep every decision defensible.

Bank statements and payslips sit at the centre of lending, leasing and hiring decisions. They are also among the easiest documents to edit, because most now arrive as PDFs or phone photos rather than originals.

Good review starts with the basics a person can check quickly. Do opening and closing balances agree with the transactions between them? Do pay dates, pay periods and employer details line up across several months? Does the salary on the payslip match the deposits on the statement? Does the document match others in the same application, such as the identity document and the employment letter?

Consistency across documents is often more revealing than any single file. A payslip that looks perfect on its own can still disagree with the bank statement it is meant to support.

Software adds what the eye cannot see. Truvasse examines submitted digital evidence for supported forensic indicators of modification, inconsistency and provenance issues, including what a file's own data says about how and when it was produced, and whether the details inside it agree with the rest of the case. Every finding is explained in plain language for the reviewer.

When something does not add up, the strongest next step is usually to ask. Request the original statement directly from the bank portal, ask the applicant to explain a discrepancy, or request a replacement document. Many issues have ordinary explanations, and giving people the chance to explain is both fair and good practice.

Finally, record the outcome. Note what was received, what was found, what was asked and why the decision was made. Truvasse keeps this as a defensible record automatically, so if a decision is ever questioned by an auditor, regulator or applicant, the answer is already written down.
